Why is self storage so expensive?

During tough economic times, when the average American is having a hard time of it paying bills and buying groceries, it is only natural that we should see an increase in comments about the price of self storage.

We will attempt to answer that question in this article. We are Mouser Self Storage, serving South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson County. Call us at 682-800-3949 for current storage pricing information.

The cost of mini storage.

Let’s get right down to the nitty gritty of this matter, namely the cost of self storage.  Why, we are asked, does the price need to increase? After all, the buildings are already built.  It’s not like there are additional costs to the infrastructure or to the bank loans which financed the construction of a storage facility.

But that is only a small fraction of the cost of building and maintaining storage places.  Labor costs rise, which they should, because employees need to pay their bills.  The cost of insurance rises, as do the costs of electricity and water and materials and products.  When a conversation discusses the cost of living, in the same breath it needs to discuss the cost of doing business, and those are the cold, hard facts of operating a business in uncertain times.

If the cost of 10’x10’ storage units were to rise from the current $60 per month to $65, that is not some random decision based on the desire to make more money; it is triggered by a corresponding rise in operational costs.

We truly wish it were not so; we would love to keep prices at a 2020 level, but that is not realistic and simply not feasible.

Compare that to the cost of replacement.

And, so, we keep prices as low as possible and try to keep any increases to the bare minimum, knowing that people need storage solutions even though they are strapped for cash.

Homes are sold. Jobs are relocated. Soldiers are deployed. People die, kids move out, and life continues, so self storage is a necessary service which is needed.

Why is it needed? Simply because the alternative, to not pay for self-storage, could very easily be more costly than the price of storage.  What does it cost to replace a stolen car? Certainly, more than paying for car storage.  What does it cost to repair vandalism on your RV? Certainly, more than paying for RV self storage?  What does it cost to pay for a Pod and park it in your driveway for two months? Certainly, more than paying for self-storage for the same period.

What is the cost of peace of mind?

And that brings us to the heart and soul of this discussion.  Paying for a storage unit means paying for peace of mind.  Paying for secure self storage is an expense most people are willing to accept, because the alternative, constantly worrying about losing valuables, is unacceptable.
