A self storage tale #1
There was a man, an important man in the world of business, and he was traveling to Europe, on business, and would be gone for six months. He decided he needed car storage while he was gone. And so he rented one of the many available storage units in his town, paid for his six months, declined the offer for a short tour of the facility, parked his car in his storage space, and went about his business.
Returning after six months, he went to retrieve his car, only to find that, while he was gone, his unit had been broken into and his car had been vandalized. What he had failed to do was check the security measures used by that storage company, and that omission had cost him thousands of dollars in car repair.
A frightening storage tale #2
A married couple with two small children had sold their house. They would be moving into a new home in a month and needed a storage unit to hold their household possessions for the month they were “without a home.” They paid their money, moved all of their possessions into a self storage 10’x30’ unit, and returned in a month only to find many of their items damaged due to oxidation within the unit.
Their mistake: they had failed to realize that there are some items which cannot be put into a self storage in extreme temperatures, and during that month the temperature had soared above one-hundred degrees on ten days.
Choose wisely among the many options.
You have over sixty-thousand storage places to choose from, over one-million storage units within those storage places; with so many options, there really is no excuse for not doing your research and choosing a storage company which will keep your possessions safe.
There are four levels of security which you should demand as a paying customer:
- Fenced perimeter with only one access gate
- Video monitoring throughout the property.
- Computerized access key card for the storage unit and the main gate.
- On-site management.
Anything less than that means unsecured storage, which means your possessions are not safe.
Extreme temperatures? Check the list of items which should not be stored in a storage unit, the most obvious of which is food. However, many items on that list are perfectly fine if you rent a climate control storage unit. With a constant temperature maintained in the unit, most items will be safe from oxidation for months.
Will it cost a bit more? Yes! Is it worth it for your valuables? We can’t answer that, but if we had items which we needed safe from Mother Nature, we would seriously consider the extra few dollars per month.
