What cannot be stored in a self storage?
It really is easier to list things which absolutely should not be stored in storage facilities; that list would include the following:
- Explosives
- Perishables
- Illegal substances/items
- Collectibles of high value
- Electronics
- Items with certain surfaces, like leather or metal
We need to qualify this list a bit. The first three items on that list are no-brainers. The fourth on the list, collectibles, we believe are worthy of some sort of safe or lockbox. If you are collecting vintage furniture, or rare art, a storage unit is not secure enough for those items.
Electronics are susceptible to extreme temperature changes, as are items with surfaces like leather or metal. If you have access to climate control self storage, where the temperature in a unit is kept at a constant temperature, then those items are perfectly safe in storage facilities.

Prices change, and this article may be read tomorrow or it may be read five years from now, rendering a price quote null and void. We can say this about prices: the larger the storage unit, the more I will cost. Secondly, prices are usually pretty uniform within any city. Competition tends to regulate prices, so it would be rare if you found a major price discrepancy among storage facilities in your city.
Amenities are not standard, but they are worth looking for.
Everything mentioned so far is pretty much what you can expect at a self storage company. However, there are some amenities which are not standard. Climate control self storage is one of those extras. You will pay extra for it. Electrical outlets in a storage unit is not standard. 24/7 access may or may not be standard at any given company.
You should also be aware of the liability factor. Items kept at storage facilities are only insured against the liability of the storage facility staff in the case of carelessness, or if the facility incurs storm damage of some sort. Say a water main busts and floods your storage unit. You will be covered by the insurance carried by the facility. However, we always suggest, especially with very valuable items, that you carry temporary renters insurance. Your insurance agent can take care of this for you; it is very inexpensive for a self storage unit and it is well-worth the extra effort.
