10’x10’ storage units are the smallest storage units we offer at Mouser Self Storage, a fairly standard size in the storage industry. Some storage places have 5’x10’ as their smallest; either way, one of the most common questions we receive has to do with the self storage capacity of a 10’x10’, so we will answer that question in this article by Mouser Self Storage, serving South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson County. Call us at 682-800-3949 for more information about current pricing and availability.

10’x10’ storage units are really larger than those dimensions.

Ten-by-ten is obviously one-hundred square feet of storage space, right?

Wrong!  People inevitably forget that a standard storage unit is also eight feet high, meaning you have all of that vertical space to use as well, meaning a 10’x10’ really offers 800-cubic-feet of storage spaces.

And that is a considerable amount of space available if you pack and stack correctly.

What will fit inside?

This, then, is the key question. So far, all we have talked about is numbers. Let’s get down to real life applications of those numbers.

On our website we tell you that a 10’x10’ will hold the following items:

Holds 1 bedroom apartment, 2 office suites,
patio furniture, small appliances.

But those are just generalizations, and they refer, mainly, to the furniture in a one-bedroom apartment or in two office suites.  Yes, there is floor space for all of the furniture in a one-bedroom apartment, but there is also vertical space to handle dozens of well-packed boxes.  In fact, with some planning and careful thought, we would go so far as to say it would be possible to add an extra room to that estimate, depending upon the amount of furniture in that room, of course.

One word of caution.

And now we drop the other shoe.

Stacking is a great way to take advantage of the eight feet of vertical space, but only if you are using strong, reinforced cardboard boxes, or tough totes. Otherwise, one day, you will come back to access items in your storage unit and find that your carefully packed boxes have collapsed under the weight of the possessions, and you are faced with a serious clean-up task.

We are going to take one final moment to mention this old bromide: just because you can does not mean you should.

Not all things should be storage in storage units.  Illegal items, most definitely not! Perishables? Forget about it!  Explosives? Please, do not consider it!  And items which can be damaged due to extreme temperatures? No, unless you rent climate-controlled storage.
