There are, currently, over 60,000 storage places, otherwise known as self storage companies, in the United States. It is a multi-billion dollar industry, tens-of-millions of Americans have used them, and that number is increasing. Still, there are tens-of-millions who have not, and this article is for them. Consider this a primer on storage places.
We are Mouser Self Storage, serving the good people of South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson Counties. Call us at 682-800-3949 for information about self storage prices and availability.
What are storage places?
For the few who might not know what storage spaces are, they are “walk-in” lockers, which you can rent short-term, by the month, no minimum requirements, so you can store your belongings temporarily. The smallest unit is usually either 5’x10’ or 10’x10’ and the largest can reach 20’x40’ dimensions at some places, large enough to handle all of the furniture in a three-bedroom home.
What are you allowed to store in them?
It might be easier to tell you what you cannot store in storage units:
- Explosives
- Illegal items
- Perishables
- Electronics are not advised
- Collectibles are not advised.
Other than those exceptions, practically every other possession can be stored. Many locations even offer car storage, RV self storage, and boat storage units. There are some, like Mouser Self Storage, which even have hobby shops available in some of the units, which feature lights, electricity, and 24/7 access.
What do they cost?
It is impossible to accurately answer that question in an article like this, simply because prices change, and when you read this will determine what the prices are at that time. We can tell you that the smallest units are somewhere in the $50-$75 per month range, with the largest approaching $200 per month. However, that is simply an estimate. Prices vary from city to city and even vary within one city.
If climate control self storage is offered, that will cost more. Hobby shops are more than regular storage units. There are also special prices for outside storage, some places charge extra for electricity . . . it just depends upon each individual location. The best answer to the question is this: call around and find the best price for your specific needs.
One final note. The place you choose may offer very secure self storage, or it may be lacking in security measures. Our recommendation is to always call your insurance company and pick up some renters insurance short-term. It is very inexpensive and it just adds an extra layer of protection for you.
