The day for moving into a self storage unit has arrived. The money has been paid, the contract signed, and you have the truck available.

What now? We will discuss that “what now” in this article by Mouser Self Storage, serving South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson County with affordable self storage options. Call us at 682-800-3949 for current pricing information.

The more planning the better!

Listen, you can take the easy approach for sure. You can back your pickup truck up to the storage unit and just start unloading.  Start with the back, move forward, stack as high as you deem safe, invariably cramming items in at the end.  Trust us when we tell you this is the most common way for people to pack storage units. When they get done it looks like an earthquake hit and just randomly tumbled their possessions inside a large container.

That is the fastest approach, for sure, but it is also the least efficient way, and it is guaranteed to provide headaches the first time you need specific items from that a self storage unit.

We have a better way.

Follow these suggestions to cut down on future headaches:

  1. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
  2. Place the heaviest stuff on the bottom of a self storage unit and distribute weight evenly.
  3. Put anything you need to access often at the front of your unit.
  4. Leave a pathway to the back of the unit.
  5. Elevate things off the floor.
  6. Consider disassembling large furniture or storing it vertically.
  7. Label your boxes specifically for storage
  8. And, finally, during the loading process, make a diagram of the entire unit, marking where each item is, for future reference. This will be easy to do if you have done #4 on this list.

Is this a tedious approach? It may seem that way and, without a doubt, it will take you longer to follow this process. However, and trust us on this, most people, the vast majority, who rent storage units come back to the units for something they need, and it is at that point that the headaches begin. Why not take an extra half-hour during the loading process and do it right?

We can help with more suggestions.
