For those who rent storage units, this question is often overlooked. How hot, or cold, will it get in storage spaces during the cold of winter and the heat of summer? Is that important and, if so, why?
We tackle those questions and provide you with the information you need before renting storage units. We are Mouser Self Storage, serving South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson County with affordable and secure self storage solutions. The nature of storage units construction.
Storage units, by their very nature, are designed to protect whatever is stored in them from the rain, from theft, and from vandalism. They are a safe place in most respects; having said that, most of them are not constructed with the best in insulation. Why? Because the higher the insulation value, the more costly the construction costs, plain and simple. Developers are always interested in cutting construction costs if possible, and the type of insulation used will do just that.
Need proof? Go take a quick tour of several storage spaces in July or January. It won’t take you long to see the truth in our statement. Storage units are basically plywood boxes with minimum insulation.
The damage possible by Mother Nature.
What we just described is fine if you are not storing items which can be affected by humidity or extreme temperatures. In other words, if the humidity cannot harm your stored items, and all you want is secure self storage from theft and/or vandalism, practically any storage unit will do.
However, if you are storing antiques . . . if you are storing electronics . . . if you are storing something with a surface made from materials (leather) which can crack in the cold or fade in the heat, then you really do need a solution to combat Mother Nature.
And, if that is the case, you really only have one option.
The only option you really have is . . .
Rent a storage unit with climate control. Most self-storage places will have a limited number of storage units which offer a constant temperature within the unit; these units are constructed with better insulation in most cases, and that fact, plus the temperature control, will protect your valuable items no matter what havoc Mother Nature is doing outside.
That’s the good news; the bad news is climate control self-storage will cost more. How much more? You can expect an increase of approximately $10 per month for the smaller units; for the larger units, that increase can be as much as $75-$100 per month simply because a larger space requires more energy to heat or cool.
Our recommendation: for short storage periods, the effects of extreme cold or extreme heat will be minimal. IN other words, if you are simply storing items for a month, chances are excellent that Ma Nature will not do any damage to your items. However, storage which spans several months, that is another matter altogether and may require extra protection.
