Now, let’s turn the discussion to boat storage units.
What are boat storage units?
Boat storage units generally refer to dry-docking, a covered, usually self-contained space, where a boat can be stored, out of water, for a period of time. If you are storing your boat in your garage you are, in essence, using a boat storage unit. However, for the sake of this discussion, let’s assume your garage is used for your vehicle, necessitating a separate storage unit located elsewhere.
Boat storage units can be found at marinas, at actual boat storage companies, and at self-storage facilities. They offer secure self storage, a place where you can work on your boat in private, and they offer a secure self storage so that your boat is safe from vandalism, theft, and the ravages of Mother Nature. What they do not offer, however, is quick and easy access to the water.
Marina options?
Marina storage, for this discussion, refers to boat moorage at a marina, in the water, tied up to the dock. Generally, the marina is protected by a fence and a locked access gate. Truthfully, although this may appear to be secure, it is far from it. Anyone capable of scaling a six-foot wire fence is capable of inflicting damage on your boat. However, it is infinitely more secure than leaving your boat in your driveway, or under a carport.
This type of storage does present problems regarding the cleaning of your boat bottom, requiring that you at some point remove your boat from the water.
Marina storage also offers immediate access to the water which is, of course, the whole purpose of owning a boat. You can be on the water in the time it takes to turn the ignition key and start up your engine.
Which is better?
There is, unfortunately, no magic answer to this question. How you store your boat is a personal preference and it depends upon a number of factors. We would suggest that you answer these questions while making up your mind:
- Is 24-hour access important to you?
- Do you regularly hook up to shore power?
- Where do you live in relation to your boat launch?
- Do you have a vehicle with towing capabilities?
- What size is your boat?
- Do you live in a tropical or seasonal climate?
- Does your craft have an outboard or inboard engine?
- How much of your own maintenance are you willing to do?
- Is it worth your time to pay for concierge services?
- Do you have space on your property to store your boat?
- How often do you use your boat?
The answer you seek, dry storage or wet storage, will depend upon the answers to those questions.
