In our professional opinion, the greatest difference among storage places is the amount of security they offer. They all might advertise secure self storage, but what does that word “secure” really mean?

There are four main levels of security in the self storage industry:

  • Fenced perimeter to the storage property
  • Video security surveillance and monitoring.
  • Computerized key cards
  • On-site management.

We have driven by, no exaggeration, self storage businesses which did not even have a perimeter fence, which we believe to be the very minimum you should expect.  We know of storage companies which offer three of the four levels but not on-site management.

Since most storage units cost approximately the same, from company to company, why not choose one which offers the very best in security?

What is offered at the various places?

Finally, the price issue.

It would be a waste of time to quote you prices in an article like this one, simply because this article may be read today or it may be read five years from now, and obviously, prices change. The best we can do for you is to give you ballpark figures.  The smallest storage unit will cost you somewhere in the $50-$70 range. The largest can run $150-$200 per month.  Specialty units, like for large RVs, will be closer to the $200 per month figure, while hobby shops can run $300-$500 per month.  Storage places which offer climate control self storage will charge more for that convenience.

What we can tell you about prices in this industry is that they are fairly uniform. This is a very competitive industry, and in such industries, prices tend to be pretty consistent from company to company.  Pay attention, though, to monthly specials, and many places will offer military discounts as well as retiree discounts.
