The answers.
What is self-storage? Self-storage is essentially an extension of your garage or shed; a clean, dry and secure space located in a storage facility used to store your belongings for as long as you need it.
How does self-storage work? You decide how large a storage unit you need, you rent that unit by the month, you are given an access key for the unit, and you move your possessions into said unit.
What are the different types of storage units? Basic units offer storage for your furnishings and possessions. There is also car storage, RV self storage, boat storage units, and even small hobby shops. In addition, there are amenities available like electricity, power outlets, climate control, and even 24/7 access.
How much do storage units cost? An impossible question to answer in this limited space. Prices vary from company to company and from city to city. A general answer would be that unit prices increase as the size of the unit increases. In addition, certain amenities will also increase the price of a unit.
Who are some of the major self-storage providers? National storage providers like U-Haul, Public Storage, and CubeSmart are many. In addition, there are always several local providers in most cities.
Is it worth it to rent a storage unit? There is no way for us to answer this question since it is a personalized question. Is it worth it for you to pay a monthly fee to keep your possessions safer than they would be in, say, your garage or backyard shed?
What items should you put in self-storage? The list of items you can storage is a long one, too long for this article. It is easier to list the items you cannot storage in storage spaces, so let’s move on to the next question.
What items cannot be put in storage? Food, perishables, weapons, explosives, illegal substances, and anything which can be damaged by oxidation caused by extremes in temperatures i.e. electronics, collectibles like wine collections or art, and certain surface materials like leather.
When in doubt, ask the storage company personnel.
