Should Valuables Be Stored in Storage Units?

This question about valuables in storage units is one we are asked quite often, so perhaps it deserves its own article.  We are Mouser Self Storage, serving South Fort Worth, Alvarado, and Johnson County with a bevy of storage solutions. Call us at 682-800-3949 for information about current pricing and availability of storage spaces.

What should never be stored in storage units.

We are going to present a list of items generally considered no-nos with regards to self storage; however, this list comes with a couple qualifiers:

  • Food (including perishable items like meat, fish, and cheese)
  • Toxic or flammable materials (such as hazardous chemicals)
  • Weapons (including ammunition)
  • Irreplaceable or valuable items (e.g., art, jewelry, or collectibles)
  • Spare tires (due to potential damage or loss)
  • Unregistered, uninsured, or inoperable vehicles (e.g., cars, motorcycles) It is against the law to do so.
  • Clutter (as it can attract pests and mold).

This list would be a longer one if it were not for climate control self-storage. If the storage facility has climate control, the following items are fine in self-storage; without climate control, we would also recommend the following items not be stored:

  • Collectibles
  • Electronics
  • Surfaces which can rust or discolor
  • Wine
  • Important papers

Extreme temperatures will wreak havoc on the items listed above.

Valuables and their safety.

Now, regarding the question of valuables.  If storage places employ the four levels of security, it is our opinion that anything you store will be safe. What are the four levels of security?

  • Fenced perimeter with only one access point for entry and departure
  • Video security monitoring
  • On-site management
  • Computerized, individualized access key cards

Having said all that, nothing is perfect.  Professional thieves are called professional because they know how to beat practically any security system, so the next recommendation is strongly suggested.

Insurance is never a bad idea.

Renters insurance is inexpensive and, quite frankly, a must for anyone storing items which have a high value. You can call around for quotes, but what you will find is a cost which is very reasonable when compared to the peace of mind it provides.

Irreplaceable items like family heirlooms? In all honesty, we would not suggest storing those items in self storage units no matter how secure the company is.  Irreplaceable is irreplaceable, and no amount of renters insurance can bring those items back if they are stolen or damaged.  Find a better storage solution for items which cannot be replaced, our professional opinion.
