Factors to consider when you rent storage units.

Everything is relative, you know.  Einstein told us that is true, so it must be true, right? And it is definitely true with regard to renting storage spaces.

What are the factors to consider?

Availability might be the factor you consider important.  How hard is it to find a storage unit which fits your needs? Does this differ from month to month?

Price might be your motivating factor. Does the price change in the spring? Fall? Winter? Summer? And are there amenities you might need in one season which you won’t need in another?  Amenities cost extra money and thus this is a factor worth considering.

The best time of year is . . .

Weighing all of the factors and remembering that sometimes you simply do not have the option of choosing the best time, winter is, by far, the best time to rent storage units.

Why?

Winter is when demand for storage units is at the yearly low. Fewer people are moving in the winter. Fewer people tackle “spring cleaning” in the winter. Usually, people just hunker down while it snows and rains and save big projects, like spring cleaning, for nicer weather.

Less demand means there is a better chance of lower prices, which is always a good thing.

Remember, these points are not etched in stone. What may be true in Fort Worth, where we are located, may not be true in Florida, where there is no real winter to speak of, or in Buffalo, where it seems winter can last ten months.  Still, on a national average, the points we have made are the norm rather than the exception.

One thing to be aware of.

If you follow this advice, and hold off renting a storage unit until December, be aware of this important point: extreme cold, or extreme dampness, can be an important factor for items placed in storage.  Rust is a common problem during the winter, which means you are much more likely to need to rent climate control self-storage units so you can have a constant temperature within the storage units. This will prevent any damage from the elements, but it will also cost you extra in a monthly payment.

And there you have it!  Winter is, on average, the best time for renting storage units, but remember there is always an exception to every rule.
